Speaker Spotlight – David Moore

Founder, Director of Operations at ShadesColour & Associates. David Moore is an eCommerce expert and developer, with over 10 years of real world experience both building online stores, and running them.

What’s been your best experience with WordPress?

I’m happy to a be a WordPress/woocommerce developer. I’m really happy. I run other businesses and WordPress has given me the means in which I can represent my own businesses, and in turn, help other businesses to better represent themselves on the internet.

I was an early adopter of WordPress. I’ve been using it since Version 2, and I’m really proud to be involved with something that has really grown in all kinds of leaps and bounds.

I’m still finding new uses for WordPress, which I think is awesome!

Tell us a bit about your WordCamp Halifax talk.

It’s all about the basics of eCommerce. It all starts with the thought of, “I think I’d like to sell something on the internet.”

How do you get to that point of actually saying to the world, “Hey, look at me, I’m selling something, and my store is all ready for you to use.”

We’ll cover things from shipping and payment gateways, to images and compression, some mobile functionality, I’ll probably bring up speed and using too many plugins…

eCommerce is not necessarily a hard task. Like anything it’s a skill you can learn. There is a lot of little moving parts to eCommerce and I think it’s a lot of fun. So we’ll take a walk through choosing a product, setting up a store, enabling all that you need to enable, and be ready to start marketing it.

And if anyone wants to dive a little deeper, I can entertain that too!

What’s your favourite thing about WordCamps, or if your first one… what are you looking forward to?

Happiness Bar. It’s a chance for me to sit down with someone, typically one on one and try to solve a problem they’re having. I like puzzles, I’m problem solver/nerd… but with spectacular people skills, and I’m an extrovert; in my experience that’s a rare mix in the world of developers.

Let’s get philosophical… what are you most proud of?

Starting a business, watching it grow and fall apart, and from the ashes growing a much larger businesses, which will soon go national… We’ll talk about this in my talk too.

Session Details

eCommerce is a really REALLY big thing in the world, yet Canadians are still dragging their feet in the mud when it comes to selling online. Let’s break down some walls as I guide you through the basics of setting up an online store.

There is a reason I’m one of the few WooCommerce developers in Nova Scotia… eCommerce scares people, even devs! This talk is good for anyone interested in e-commerce.

We’ll go over the basics: physical products vs digital products/services, shipping providers, taxes, payment gateways, SSL/security. Depending on how people feel, we’ll go a little deeper, and maybe collectively pray to the shipping gods that USPS buys out CanadaPost & saves us all. (half joking).

When it comes to eCommerce, there are no stupid questions, no matter how small, and I’ll happily answer any questions anyone has.
