Is WordCamp For You?

There’s nothing worse than showing up to a conference and realising that it might not be the right place for you to learn, so it’s no surprise that the question we get most is ‘Is WordCamp right for me?”

The short answer is: If you have a WordPress site, are thinking of starting a WordPress site or are looking to connect with new clients who could have a WordPress site (i.e. any small business in any field), then WordCamp Halifax is for you.

If you’re still not sure, we’ve come up with a short list of our top reasons why WordCamp is definitely for you.

Three Tracks of Learning For Any Skill Level

At WordCamp Halifax, we are lucky enough to have three tracks of learning from beginner to advanced covering a range of topics from content creation to WordPress development.

Do you have a website built by a professional but you’re not sure how to make the most of it? Take in our Beginner track: Content Creators or our intermediate track: Site Creators to take control of your website and make it work for you.

Are you a developer and are looking to refresh your skills or learn something new? We’re lucky to have a full developer track so you can take on topics catered to you, as well as meet up with other developers–both local and international–to expand your network while you’re at it.

No Stupid Questions

If you’ve never been to a WordPress Meetup, then you haven’t been acquainted with the warmest and most welcoming tech community that Halifax has to offer.
We know there is a learning curve around this powerful CMS (Content Management System), and we’re prepared for any question you might have with an open mind. We were all WordPress beginners at one point and we remember how confusing it can be when you’re tackling it on your own.

One-on-One help

If you’ve tried to make edits to your WordPress site before without much luck or find the prospect changing your site overwhelming, you can get help from the Happiness Bar or the “Hallway Track”. The Happiness bar is located on the Second Floor when you walk into the conference, and it’s where we will have volunteers stationed to help you with your site.

Are you just considering getting started with a WordPress site and aren’t sure where to begin? Sit down with our Happiness Bar and get the help you need to choose a hosting provider and have your first WordPress website installed. WordCamp is a great place to get one-on-one help from experts without paying consultant prices for getting started.

The “Hallway Track”, as we lovingly call it, is where WordCamp attendees meet up with others to help each other with all aspects of web content and design. You might meet a social media expert to help you distribute your content, or a designer to give you pointers on your Instagram. There are several avenues of personalized help you can get from this community of people hell-bent on helping each other succeed.

Not just WordPress

While this is a WordPress Conference, we have three tracks of learning that cover a range of topics around Web Design and Content Management. It’s easy to forget that above all, WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS), and this conference will be handling all aspects of managing your site.

Likewise, the attendees of WordCamp are not just WordPress Developers. We have a wide range of business owners, students and hobbyists. You could end up sitting next to a photographer and chatting composition in the “Hallway Track” between sessions or make new friends with fellow business owners who might have a word of advice on how to handle a difficult client.

Single Session = Your Ticket Cost

If you want to attend a conference but don’t have a lot of money for ticket prices. At WordCamp, you can visit a single session and recoup your ticket price. If you’re not sure what topics you should attend, you’ll be happy to hear that the law of two feet rules WordCamp. If you’re not connecting with one topic, you can pick yourself up and go check out something else. Our speakers won’t take it personally.

As well, if you can take in the Panel discussion, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions of some of our industry experts in an ultra-casual setting.

And, if you’re just looking to spend an hour at the Happiness bar getting some one-on-one help with your site, you can still look forward to swag and lunch with some incredible people in the WordPress community. The WordPress organization subsidizes the $25 ticket price so you can look forward to 21 sessions including a panel discussion and a plugin roundtable, swag, lunch and an afterparty without breaking the bank.

The People. The Networking. The Afterparty

If you’re looking for a casual networking opportunity, we have the Greywood booked for our killer afterparty, sponsored by Chalk. You can walk down the stairs after the event, grab a table and chat about what skills or services you have to offer, or skip the networking all-together and talk about what you learned instead. The Greywood is located in the lower level of the Dalhousie Student Union building, so you don’t have to go far to relax after the conference.

If you are looking to pick up a ticket to WordCamp Halifax on June 16th, we need to remind you that tickets will not be sold at the door, so make sure to pick yours up Right Here before 4pm Friday the 15th.

  1. Crystal, from your experience are there many business owners at word camp?

As I’m Memberium certified I would come to meet others who want to make a membership site or online learning site with WordPress.

    • Hi Shaun!

Yes, we have a range of business owners from those who are putting together their own websites to those who hired someone to develop their site and want to learn how to make changes. Mostly small business owners but we have some larger business employees from a couple places as well. They’re like employees who are being sent by the company to the event.

      Hope to see you there!
